This is a house at the corner of Willivee and North Druid Hills. Something was spray-painted and then painted over in white, which was then painted over with this site-specific piece.
Anyone know the story?

i'd say there were 2 other things there before this -- maybe a fuck bush -- which became fuck you?
Possibly, but it doesn't quite look like it. I'll have the long lens on the next time I drive by, so I have more pixels to try to decode it.
Someone told me it had to do with a fight within the homeowner's association for the neighborhood - not sure what the exact catalyst was, though.
from what I hear, the S&M mannequin and such is what started the fight with the neighborhood.
I actually met the guiy a couple weeks ago, he is a slightly whacky old hippy.
I don't think that neighborhood -- about a stone's throw from mine -- has an association with any power at all. That might be part of the gripe. Dude has an incredibly ugly addition on his house, so I'm guessing that's the source of friction.

I live on Willivee. We don't even have a home owner's association so that is not the crux. I drove by one day and code enforcement and a Dekalb County office were at this house arguing with the guy in the front yard. At the time the mannequin was tied to a tree in the front yard with a simple t-shirt on (no flag, bra, afro, or anything else). Since we have no HOA it had to be just a complaining neighbor. One week later the mannequin went to roof and "Free Speech" was painted on the house. If you look at what is painted over in white, it is also the words "Free Speech." He must not have liked the way it looked the first time and decided to try again. As far as I know that is about all there is to the story other than the guy never mows his lawn, although he occasionally takes a weed wacker to select areas. He also uses only sheets for curtains and the "ugly" addition seems to be completely vacat.

I've seen this house and tried to figure out what is going on. Here is my hunch - the owner built the addition to his house without the proper permits. I think additions in this area have to be at or below the main house roofline. I think the county probably told him he couldn't use this addition and he should have to tear it down, so my guess is he probably said it is not an addition to the house it is art! I base this on the fact that the addition has never been finished or occupied in the several years I have been looking at it. I could be wrong, just my guess. You should see the property 1/2 mile up the road. A guy built a crazy throne and iron fence adorned with sperm wearing hats that looks down on the road. Every once in a while I will see him sitting on the throne peering down at rush hour traffic. My description really doesn't do this justice, the guy must have a metal shop in his basement because his yard is full of crazy metal art. | |
