| DNC, Night 1 |

On my earlier "one nation" bit, they really should have labeled this evening "we are family." Yes, it's cheesy, but the slate is Jesse Jackson's son, JFK's daughter and brother, and Barack Obama's wife as the headliner.
Ted Kennedy. Just. Damn. He brought it like a guy who didn't have his skull cut open a couple of months ago.
The Ken Burns video tribute felt a lot like a eulogy (jeez, can't we let the dude out of his brothers' shadow for one night?), but Ted let it be known he isn't done quite yet. Still, all his calls to action had an almost-audible "... one last time" after them.
I'm sure that being Jesse Jackson Junior is both a blessing and a curse, but I'm not sure in what proportions. It was a solid speech, but he lacks his daddy's fire. The "common ground" reference was a nice touch.
I skipped Nancy Pelosi's speech, because, well, I can.
Former Rep. Jim Leach is no firestarter, but that's really not the point. Having a Republican on the podium takes some of the wind out of Lieberman's sails next week.
I sacked out early and missed most of Michelle Obama's speech, but some pundits are already talking dynasty. Jesus Horatio Christ on rye, we just knocked the Clintons out of the running and we're about to bury the Bushes, and they're already starting in with that shit?
I think I'm going to have "Won't Get Fooled Again" on a tape loop in my head for the next nine or ten days. Or maybe the next two months. |
